If you are considering flights to Morocco you will no doubt conjure up images of exotic bazaars, carpet sellers and kasbahs full of hooker smokers. This former French colony has many evocative destinations that tourists will be familiar with through the cinema, Casablanca, Tangiers and Marrakech have a charm and romance all of their own.
Towns of Morocco
Rabat the capital of Morocco is a laid back, relaxed city, not as hectic as some of the other popular destinations. Sights here include the old walled Madina town centre, the fortified city of Kasbah des Oudaias and the Roman ruins at Chellah.
Marrakesh has since the 1960’s been a popular Moroccan destination and sights like the beautiful botanical delights of the Majorelle Gardens or the amusement of the Djemma el Fna, a square full of places to eat and be entertained by jugglers and snake charmers.
Tangiers is the gateway to North Africa and many cruise ships heading into the Mediterranean call here. Noted for its cosmopolitan blend of cultures, cuisine and sounds. The old town Medina is a busy maze of narrow alleyways and bazaars where you can find lots of souvenirs especially around the main square, the Grand Socco.
Casablanca still has elements of the romantic Hollywood image in the old town but the Casablanca of today is a modern energetic city full of life. It is a city of tree-lined boulevards, and areas like the old diplomatic quarter that is populated with some interesting architecture.
Fes is notorious for its leather craftsmen and you can tour the tanneries and find excellent bargains in the souqs and market stalls of the old town centre.
Morocan adventure
Adventure in Morocco is never far away, from trekking though the majestic Atlas and Rif mountains or skiing on the slopes at Oukaimeden definitely make for a unique holiday. Morocco also has excellent surfing along its shores that are battered by the relentless tides of the Atlantic Ocean or you can explore the vast expanses of the Sahara Desert by camel and take tea in a Bedouin camp.
Relaxing in Morocco
One of the best ways of unwinding whilst in Morocco is to take a steam bath at the local hammam, these public baths give you a chance to relax and have a rejuvenating massage at the same time. These have always been meeting places for people to catch up on gossip and chat, many high-end hotels these days also offer the hammam experience in house and deliver invigorating massages and saunas in privacy but the real excitement can be found by mixing with the locals in town.
Morocco with its laid back beaches of Agadir and the individualistic sky blue buildings on the streets of Chefchaouen will enthral any visitor. There are the Tinfou dunes and Tamegroute in the Zagora desert or the seaside resorts of Ouarzazate and Tarfaya. Its proximity to Europe and value for money make Morocco a popular mysterious North African destination.
